Slide 1
If someone always meets our expectations, how much do we really know about their potential?
Slide 2
A little classroom moment... ‘Count till 50.’ She counted to 50. And stopped. When asked if she knew any more, she replied: ‘I know more! But you told me to stop at 50!’
Slide 3
What did we actually learn? She showed that she could count to 50. But did that tell us how far she could count? What we observe can be accurate, and still incomplete.
Slide 4
Beyond childhood... We become familiar with what people usually do. At work: Someone always follows the plan. Have we seen what else they could contribute? At home: Someone always handles the same responsibilities. Have we seen what else they could take on? How much of what we know about people is shaped by the roles they play?
Slide 5
Perhaps discovering more about someone doesn’t always require them to do more. Sometimes it starts with us asking something different. A different opportunity. A new question. A little room to surprise us. What else might we discover about someone if we remain a little more curious?
Slide 6
Pause for a moment! Think of someone who consistently does what’s expected of them. When was the last time you asked what they would like to try? And would you welcome an answer that surprised you?
Slide 7
Meeting expectations tells us what someone has demonstrated. Curiosity reminds us there may be more to discover. When has someone surprised you by showing a side you hadn't seen before? Share it in the comments — someone else may need that perspective, too.
